The Creative Work Begins

As we wrap up the Name Your Team campaign and the application process for our design team this week, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone across Canada who participated. Your enthusiasm, creativity, and support have been truly inspiring, and we’re thrilled with the incredible ideas you’ve shared.

We’ve received an amazing variety of submissions from all corners of the country. Here are some highlights that showcase the diversity and imagination that came through:

  • More than 1,170 cities participated, making this a true national effort.
  • 13% of submissions reflected Toronto landmarks, capturing the essence of our city.
  • 9% of entries came from French-speaking Canada, highlighting our linguistic diversity.
  • 18% of submissions were inspired by mammals, showing a strong connection to the animal kingdom.
  • 9.6% of entries featured prehistoric animals or dinosaurs, adding a powerful, timeless twist.

Well done, Canada!

So, what’s next?

Now that the submission phase is over, we’re diving into the next steps — which are just as thrilling.

Our Community Council has begun shortlisting potential names based on your inspiration to go through the legal and trademark stages. Meanwhile, our newly assembled design team, responsible for creating the visual identity of the team, will start bringing those concepts to life, creating the brand identity for Canada’s first WNBA team to unveil to the world later this year.

“Your enthusiasm, creativity, and support have been truly inspiring.”

But as we’ve said from the beginning, we’re doing things differently here at WNBA Toronto. We will be taking you on all of these steps throughout the journey.

This means the submission process is only the start of what’s to come. Continue to follow this blog and our recently launched podcast — where we discuss the team’s progress, share behind-the-scenes stories, and interview key figures in the campaign — for regular updates and insights into what’s happening as we move closer to unveiling the team name, logo and more.
